Our client is seeking an experienced Service Accountant to provide high-quality, proactive financial support and challenge across a range of service areas. You will work closely with budget holders and managers, providing accurate financial information and advice to support budget setting, monitoring, accounts closure and efficiency programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Support budget holders across revenue and capital budget setting, monitoring and year-end accounts closure.
- Provide proactive financial advice, challenge and guidance to support effective operational decision-making.
- Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial information for reporting and information requests.
- Apply appropriate financial controls, procedures, standing orders and relevant legislation.
- Identify emerging financial risks and work with managers to develop solutions and mitigation strategies.
- Provide financial and project management support on specific projects.
- Deputise for the Group Accountant when required, including supporting and managing Accountancy Assistants.
- Coach and develop junior finance colleagues, supporting their understanding of more complex financial matters.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant financial and sector issues.
Essentials
- Proven experience in a management/service accounting role.
- Strong experience of budget setting, budget monitoring and year-end accounts closure.
- Experience working across both revenue and capital budgets.
- Strong financial analysis, reporting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to provide effective financial advice and constructive challenge to budget holders and senior stakeholders.
- Good understanding of financial controls, governance and compliance.
- Experience identifying and managing financial risks.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to coach and support junior finance staff.
- Relevant accountancy qualification or qualified-by-experience finance background.
