This opening assignment is for 3 months  

City: MARCH, Cambridgeshire

A Workshop Technician is required to inspect, repair and maintain vehicles and plant owned and operated by the District Council and to inspect, repair and maintain sewage treatment works and pumping stations owned and operated by the District Council. To participate in the workshop standby (out of hours) service covering all areas of work undertaken by the vehicle workshop including vehicles and plant and sewage treatment works.

Key responsibilities:

  • Carry out all types of repairs and preventative maintenance to manufacturers standards to ensure vehicles and plant are kept in good condition and safe to use.
  • Self manage workload and follow pre-planned maintenance schedules including arranging or pre-ordering spare parts as required.
  • Rectify daily reported defects to ensure vehicles and plant are efficiently returned to service in a safe and reliable condition and determine where further work is required that parts and/or follow up plans are in place.
  • Ensure all pre-planned vehicle safety inspections are carried out to the standards and frequency as required by VOSA.
  • Liaise with the environmental services supervisory team in order to pre-plan work requirements and workshop loading and where identified to take responsibility for allocated vehicles. Maintain performance in line with set performance measures and to supply performance information to the environmental service supervisory team as required.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of annual testing requirements and to prepare and present vehicles for VOSA examination.
  • Carry out compliance examinations to Hackney Carriage and Private Hire vehicles including the examination of taxi meters and production of compliance certificates pass or fail certificates liaising directly with the vehicle owner on any issues relating to pass or fail.
  • Complete all maintenance administration and time recording as required. Provide pier support as part of the workshop team for professional judgments relating to vehicle or component condition.
  • Work off site either at other locations belonging to the District Council or attend roadside breakdowns using deciding on remedial works or actions as required. Carry out planned maintenance and repair to sewage treatment works and pumping stations inputting into future maintenance schedules in co-operation with the council’s engineering team.
  • Maintain a category B and C driving Licence, Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) and Fork Lift drivers Licence.
  • Participate in the workshop standby (out of hours) service covering all areas of work undertaken by the vehicle workshop including vehicles and plant and sewage treatment works.

Qualifications:

  • Qualified to City & Guilds Motor Vehicle Craft Certificate Part II or NVQ Level 3.
  • Maintain a category B and C driving Licence, Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) and Forklift drivers Licence.
  • Time served recognised apprenticeship desirable.

 

Experience:

  • Post training experience of at least 3 years in all aspects of commercial vehicle repairs and maintenance.
  • Experience of working in a busy and diverse workshop environment.
  • Experience of working outside and carrying out remedial roadside repairs.
  • Experience of managing own time and workload.
  • Experience of working on municipal vehicles desirable.
  • Experience of maintaining sewage treatment works desirable.

 

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of hydraulic, electronic and pneumatic systems.
  • Knowledge of current legislation affecting maintenance, construction and use, plating tests and MOT’s desirable.
  • Knowledge and thorough understanding of all aspects of operating and maintaining a wide range of vehicles engaged in local authority associated work desirable.

 

Skills & Abilities:

  • Effective interpersonal skills to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a range of people e.g. members of the public, FDC drivers, taxi drivers and other officers of the council.
  • Ability to inspect, evaluate, repair, maintain and road test a vehicle to ensure it is safe and fit for service.
  • Ability to demonstrate multifunctional skills in vehicle engineering and diagnostics.
  • Administration skills e.g. completing accurate inspection reports, job cards, time sheets and taxi compliance certificates.
  • Able to act on own initiative and be committed to working in a team environment and providing support for team members.
  • Ability to prioritise workload, to direct resources effectively, respond quickly to demands and to ensure targets and outputs are maintained.
  • Ability to work in conditions that will bring the person into occasional contact with waste products. Examples to include, food waste in refuse vehicles and sewage related items at sewage treatment works.
