Full Job Title: Temporary Wheelchair Assessor – Community Therapies
Reference no: Sunderland 2022 AGY 114
Pay Rate: £18.81 per hour PAYE
An Enhanced DBS disclosure is required for this role.
Wheelchair Assessors play a key role in identifying the needs of adults and children accessing the service for specialist seating, wheelchairs and accessories.
Training will be provided, with formal supervision being provided by the Wheelchair Services Team Manager.
The worker will be provided with IT equipment to enable the completion of reports.
The role includes a combination of clinic-based tasks as well as assessments in the customers own home, travel expenses are payable from the workplace to customers’ homes and return to the workplace. Candidates must have a Driving Licence and use of own vehicle.
Duties to include:-
- To assist in the efficient provision of high-quality Wheelchair Assessment services to meet the identified needs of adults and children recovering from illness, trauma or decline in long term conditions or experiencing the effects of the aging process
- To carry an allocated caseload of customers
- To support customers in the assessment and provision of wheelchairs and accessories to achieve independence, safety, and comfort, including the provision of seating and posture assessments
- To provide holistic assessments of the customer identifying areas of need and ensuring that appropriate provision is made to improve quality of life
- To work to set standards within the service under the supervision of the Team Manager
- To complete assessments of customers’ needs which may include, but not limited to, functional assessments, seating and posture, spatial awareness and safe use of prescribed wheelchair and accessories
- To be adaptable and flexible within the service areas, working alongside senior therapists to ensure effective provision of the identified service
- Work alongside wheelchair services and therapy colleagues, and the Team Manager to deliver an effective, safe, high-quality service
- To demonstrate the ability to conduct an appropriate assessment to the customer
- To complete assessments of customers’ needs which may include, but not limited to, functional assessments, seating and posture, spatial awareness and safe use of prescribed wheelchair and accessories
- To be adaptable and flexible within the service areas, working alongside senior therapists to ensure effective provision of the identified service
- Work alongside wheelchair services and therapy colleagues, and the Team Manager to deliver an effective, safe, high-quality service
- To demonstrate the ability to conduct an appropriate assessment to the customer
- To advise customers of the correct use of equipment provided
- To refer customers to other services
- To record all assessments and take responsibility for data input
- To recognise limitations and identify to senior therapists when support is required
- To take an active role in project related activities within the service under the direction of the senior practitioner/Team Manager.
- To identify learning needs and areas for development, alongside senior therapists/team managers
- To participate in learning opportunities within the service
- To participate in student education within the service
- Complies with the organisations and services essential training requirements
- Maintains own Continuous Professional Development through a variety of learning methods
- Participates in supervision and appraisal with line manager

- BSc Hons or Diploma in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
- Current HCPC/ SE England registration
- Experience of, or willingness to undertake training for skills in safe and effective moving and assisting vulnerable people
- Experience of, or willing to undertake training or skills in wheelchair assessments, posture, and seating assessments
- Experience of working with vulnerable people in either the work environment or through practice education
- Experience of working in an environment which requires effective communication & listening skills, including report writing
- An ability to provide safe and effective wheelchair assessments with support/guidance from senior staff
- An ability to work collaboratively and develop effective relationships with individuals and groups
- Ability to critically analyse information
- Ability to participate in and contribute towards team training
- Ability to be flexible and adjust plans according to competing demands
- Ability to participate in projects as delegated by the Senior Practitioner/Team Manager
- Hold a current Driving Licence and have use of own vehicle
