HGV Vehicle Fitters to help out in the workshops. As part of a friendly team, you will be required to maintain and repair the council's diverse fleet of vehicles.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maintain a customer service excellence ethos. To engage proactively with customers.
  • Undertake inspections, repairs and maintenance of all council vehicles and specialist equipment to DVSA standards, Vehicle Manufacturers and Council Standards.
  • Ensure that all work undertaken is done so safely, to a high standard, being carried out effectively and efficiently within the Service’s and manufacturers prescribed guidelines/procedures and any current legislation.
  • Undertake all types of mechanical work including bodywork/chassis modifications.
  • Undertake all types of electrical work including diagnosing/fault finding using computer diagnostic equipment, adjustment and rectification via the use of handheld computer equipment.
  • Be flexible and carry out remedial work as required this may mean reacting at short notice, this is to continue to deliver high levels of service to customers.
  • Work with minimal supervision and take responsibility for own work, this may mean assisting others and helping apprentice ‘achieve their goals.
  • Assist in the control of workshop equipment repairs and defect reporting, including annual tests, and calibration.
  • Evaluate/authorise parts expenditure prior to ordering any parts.
  • Undertake shift work and to work a call out rota outside of normal working hours to meet the business needs.
  • Maintain effective relationships with representatives of DVSA, other agencies, partner services and suppliers of vehicles. Maintain all working areas in a safe, clean and tidy manner and ensure a high standard is maintained.

  • Appropriate City & Guilds Motor Vehicle Maintenance qualifications or equivalent (including Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle maintenance)
  • Full current driving license (ideally a HGV).


  • An up-to-date knowledge of modern vehicle experience of being able to diagnose logically


  • Experience of welding.
  • Experience of vehicle recovery
  • Experience of driving a range of vehicle types.

  • Ability to respond effectively in a disciplined environment whilst producing quality work consistently and to deadlines.
  • Ability to operate a range of tools and equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to work effectively alone and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • The ability to maintain and repair a range of vehicles.
