The purpose of the role is to service, maintain and repair a specialist fleet of police vehicles and allied policing equipment and ancillaries. All work to be completed in an effective, efficient and economic manner, within all force and legislative requirements, in order to allow the Constabulary to meet both operational and non-operational commitments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain programmes and schedules ensuring that all vehicle and equipment servicing, maintenance and repairs contribute to the achievement of departmental and operational objectives within budget. Delivering an effective and efficient service with good housekeeping practices.
- Prioritise and plan work, ensuring a continuous understanding of the wider force activity. Make decisions assessing potential impact on local force delivery, informing affected relevant parties.
- Arrange for vehicles to be transported from locations to place of repair and back when required, minimising the use of recovery/transport agencies where possible.
- Consult with the Fleet Service Manager to identify and monitor instances of avoidable vehicle damage and misuse/neglect.
- Comply with all legislation relating to the servicing, maintenance and repair of the Constabulary’s vehicle fleet and ancillary equipment.
- Repair Vehicles ensuring manufacturers’ repair instructions, specific methods and techniques are adhered to. Follow manufacturer and force policies with regards to arduous fleet service plans and special direction for emergency vehicles. Service vehicles accurately following the manufacturers “end to end” process for each manufacturer’s warranty.
- Diagnose and rectify faults accurately, using high and low technology electrical equipment to ensure they achieve minimum (or exceed) vehicle manufacturer and/or legislative standards.
- During maintenance events actively carry out preventative maintenance to ensure the fleet is at its best possible condition to reduce down time, as far as reasonably practicable.
- Accurately determine the serviceability of all vehicle components using industry recognised tools and equipment.
- Read, interpret and analyse wiring diagrams and interactive guides available from the various manufacturer’s, manufacturers diagnostic equipment (where available), general diagnostic equipment and web-based mediums.
- Maintain a working knowledge of police allied equipment and radio systems to allow the ability to carry out first line repair.
- Visually inspect (locally known as “lights, levels, tyres”) and road test vehicles, interpreting feedback from the vehicles correct function.
- Accurately input details of all jobs completed directly onto the Fleet computer system (TRANMAN), to ensure accurate records of work are kept and costings recorded. Accurately record obtained measurements and data on completed work, compiling technical reports where necessary, providing accurate explanations for all work carried out detailing concern, cause and correction.
- Order (and return incorrect/unused) vehicle parts, tyres, equipment and consumables directly through the Fleet computer systems (TRANMAN order numbers), seeking approval for items/packs exceeding £1200 from the Fleet Service Manager. Collectively manage the stock of vehicle service parts, fast moving spares, tyres, wheels, oils, lubricants, ancillary components and consumables.
- Maintain test equipment to diagnose, configure / reconfigure the appropriate systems correctly.

Qualifications:
- Minimum of NVQ level 3 in vehicle mechanical and electrical systems or equivalent.
- Full UK driving licence.
Skills & Experience:
- Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
- Demonstrable experience in vehicle maintenance and workshop operations in petrol, diesel, Mild hybrid, hybrid and EV vehicles.
- Experience in vehicle electrical systems including fault diagnosis and repair.
- Must have knowledge of Health and Safety in Motor Vehicle Repair and Associated Industries. Awareness of general risk assessments, COSHH regulations and Health and Safety regulations, pertinent to the vehicle maintenance industry.
- Significant experience in the motor vehicle repair industry such as a time served apprenticeship in vehicle engineering.
- Computer literate – Fleet management systems, Microsoft Office inc Excel, Word, Outlook .
