Lead a team providing fire door inspection and repairs and improvements to council owned dwellings, properties  managed by Housing & Landlord Services, to ensure compliance with the building safety Act. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for ensuring high quality work from operatives, getting work “right-first- time” and achieving high customer satisfaction whilst staying within budgetary targets and providing a cost effective, value for money service.
  • Lead on the management, monitoring and development of a portfolio to ensure sustainable development and/or best value i.e.: - materials and equipment, health and safety, Service Level Agreement/contract compliance, fleet management.
  • Manage, direct and coordinate operational resources (e.g. operatives, fleet, materials, tools) to optimise usage and ensure sufficient availability to undertake relevant response and planned work as directed by the council's scheduling system.
  • Ensure staff performance meets a high standard of delivery and customer satisfaction through the setting, and regular monitoring, of team and individual targets, identifying and providing continuous development opportunities and the effective management of any performance issues within an appropriate timescale.
  • Plan and manage staffing resources, external contractors and suppliers to ensure the completion and co-ordination of work and provision of services in order to optimise end-to-end outputs within a timely manner, whilst maintaining a high quality service.
  • Lead, plan and drive changes in Trade team and portfolio, monitoring progress to ensure delivery of continuous improvements, making short or medium term adjustments to business goals to address changing priorities. Ensure portfolio policies are developed, continuously improved, clearly understood and consistently applied by all.
  • Champion the trade and portfolio by keeping abreast of all new legislation, standards, improvements and developments in tools, equipment and materials.
  • Report and bring forward suggestions for improving, developing and implementing changes within the trade and portfolio. Ensure staff are kept up to date with changes.

  • A trade or technical qualification or significant experience in one or more of the following trades: gas, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, glazing or general trades.


  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of health & safety issues and requirements related to the construction industry.
  • Have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications or equivalent including the following: Outlook, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, and have a willingness to learn new applications and technology as appropriate.


  • Experience of managing trades and technically qualified staff with the ability to lead, motivate, performance manage and develop others to continuously improve the customer’s experience.
  • Experience of managing large revenue and capital budgets with the ability to interrogate and interpret financial and statistical data and present reports on financial performance.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills with a ‘can do’ attitude to staff resources so that all work progresses as smoothly and with minimal inconvenience to the customer.
  • Ability to meet financial and budgetary targets, developing the service to ensure high quality and value for money services are delivered.
  • Ability to converse with citizens and provide advice in accurate spoken English, or through a BSL interpreter including using written & electronic media so that information is clearly understood and acted upon by individuals or large groups (30+).
