Temporary Placement & Brokerage Officer – Children’s Services

Pay Rate: £19.79 per hour PAYE

The purpose of the role is to arrange placements within the prescribed timeframes in line with the council budget. Provide day-to-day delivery of Children’s Brokerage i.e. assisting with all types of placements such as Looked After Children, Children with Disabilities, Family Intervention Team, Community Social Work Team and the Child Protection Teams.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist in the management of the duty box as and when necessary.
  • Search for appropriate placements for children and young people in line with the social worker’s request.
  • Ensure that referral forms are anonymised before sharing these with providers.
  • Provide support, advice and information to social workers and managers as and when necessary.
  • Attend meetings with internal staff as and when requested and invited to do so on case specific matters.
  • Liaise with appropriate teams and service areas to ensure early identification of information technology issues and to contribute towards the development of effective databases.
  • Support the brokerage team with claiming back savings.
  • Support the brokerage team to source placements as and when required.
  • Build relationships with key external contacts to ensure better quality and service provision from providers.
  • Ensure that any savings are claimed back when a child leaves a foster placement where relevant.

  1. Relevant qualification (Social Care/Health, Project Management, Housing) and/or appropriate experience in Children’s services.



  1. Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
  2. Experience of working in a social care setting ideally in Children’s commissioning/brokerage.
  3. Experience of negotiating costs with service providers.
  4. Experience of partnership working in particular with providers.
  5. In depth understanding of how children’s social care services are provided.


Skills & Abilities:

  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills relevant to the duties of the post.
  2. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of stakeholders at all levels including service users and their families.
  3. Knowledge of Children’s social care providers and the associated regulating bodies including the relevant Legislation in relation to Children’s Services.
  4. Ability to work under pressure prioritizing workload and tasks.
  5. Detailed knowledge and understanding of the services provided by a range of voluntary, not for profit and commercial organizations.
  6. Display a sound understanding of equality issues, respecting and valuing individuals’ diversity and the variety of their contributions.
  7. ICT Skills: Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
