Start time is variable between 05:00-08:00 hrs with matching finishing times, Occasional weekend working. One manger to be afternoon/evening staff with a start time of 13:30.

Environmental Managers work as part of a team to manage the day-to-day service delivery of Waste Management services for residents and businesses. To manage all permanent and temporary staff allocated meet the Health & Safety, Transport and Environmental compliance.

Key responsibilities:

  • Undertake routine de-briefing, training and coaching of staff as well as inducting new staff, in the operation of vehicles and other equipment, explaining policies and procedures and providing support as necessary to ensure efficient working.
  • Instruct operatives of changes in normal routes and allocating work as necessary as a result of notified changes to daily work schedules.
  • Liaise closely with Operations and Depot/Fleet Manager on a daily basis in order to advise of any operational issues they should be aware of in relation to the days scheduled work e.g. staff issues, vehicle problems, traffic delays etc.
  • Oversee that all staff use the appropriate PPE, tools, systems (including on-board technology in real time) and equipment to undertake their roles effectively.
  • Deal with complaints and grievances from staff, in the first instance, seeking to resolve these in a proactive and positive manner in accordance with the informal stages of the relevant personnel procedure.
  • Carry out the completion of necessary records as required e.g. start / finish times, staff allocation sheets, tipping times, accident investigation reports, equipment and instruction issue records.
  • Ensure that the needs of the service are met on a daily basis in relation to vehicles and any special equipment e.g. gloves, tablets, radios, phones, electronic devices are made available and are checked by front-line staff after every journey, as necessary.
  • Hold regular Tool Box Talks and issue appropriate instructions (written and verbal) when and as directed by Operations Manager or Head of Service.
  • Schedule and arrange all allocated rounds and provide written and verbal instruction to allocated staff.
  • Liaison with residents and other internal departments to investigate and resolve issues and complaints

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Relevant degree, and/or professional qualification in any one of the Group areas, or at least 3 years relevant experience.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body, or institute.
  • Proven record of delivering management of frontline blue-collar workforce.
  • Experience in interpreting performance and software data in order to turn into effective management assessments and solutions planning.
  • Evidence of successful partnership working to deliver outcomes.
  • Experience of working with the public and liaison with representatives of housing management groups.


Knowledge & Skills:

  • Understanding and experience of Domestic Collection and Street Cleansing services.
  • Understanding of Council operation and internal structure and relationships.
  • Excellent communication and organisation skills
  • Confident with conflict resolution.
  • Be proactive and work on own initiative.
  • Hold valid driving licence (category B)
  • Computer / technology literate.
