Full Job Title: Temporary Early Years Caretaker – Children's Centre

To ensure the Early Years buildings and site areas (up to eight buildings) provide a safe, fit and efficient working environment for all organisations and people that use the buildings, facilities and outdoor areas ie children and their families, agencies that are co-located, agencies that deliver services, staff and visitors.

To undertake general duties in respect of cleaning, low level general maintenance, supplies, security, lettings and availability in emergencies.

To report directly to the Designated Manager to carry out some manual work, to supervise the work of contractors, commissioned/purchased by the centres for certain work such as cleaning and site maintenance, and in other cases to manage the supervision of other one-off contractors, in agreement with their line manager.

To work collaboratively with the wider Early Years Facilities Team (up to four early years caretakers, Senior Caretaker and Facilities Manager) and to liaise with other bodies such as the corporate Facilities Management team, health and safety team, service and supplies providers, contractors and consultants, where it is appropriate, in order to manage and progress work for the centres.

 

Specific Role Requirements” – to give yourself the maximum chance of success please try and ensure your CV addresses the following essential criteria:

  1. NVQ 2 (or equivalent) in a general building skill and/or Certificate of Health & Safety (or significant relevant experience).
  2. Knowledge & Experience:
    1. Experience in supporting the management of building maintenance requirements in a public access, educational or community building.
    2. Experience of supporting the management of external contractors to ensure that service specifications are met.
    3. Knowledge of appropriate legislation and their application in the workplace such as 1974 Health & Safety at Work Act, Manual Handling of Loads and direct experience of undertaking effective risk assessment and taking appropriate follow-on action.
    4. A good understanding of security and fire detection systems and able to carry out regular tests in accordance with Health & Safety Guidelines.
  3. Skills & Abilities:
    1. A good standard of written English & Maths so that written records can be kept, resources can be ordered, and the costs of materials can be accurately estimated
    2. Evidence of a range of skills, such as plumbing, carpentry etc, to ensure basic repairs can be carried out to a high standard, on a day to day basis.
    3. Ability to undertake redecoration works; including preparation, painting & decorating.
    4. An ability to prioritise work, assessing levels of risk, timescales, weather, seasons, availability of equipment and resources etc, to ensure work is carried out in a timely and organised manner.
    5. The ability to work under pressure, with a willingness to work flexibly and meet the changing needs of the environment and the organisation.
    6. To be able to communicate clearly both orally and in writing, keep well written records and logs, write short reports and use IT systems to send and receive information (outlook and excel in particular).
  4. ICT Skills: IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite)
