The purpose of the role is to work as part of a fast paced multi-disciplinary team, create new, user centred, evidenced-based ways for users to interact with services, by designing and creating content and interfaces, flows and interactions that are accessible and intuitive for end users and work across different channels, devices, browsers and platforms.

Key responsibilities:

  • Creating content to help digital services meet user needs and business objectives, and creating a clear, joined up customer journey.
  • Monitoring and improving content based on user feedback, research and data.
  • Improving the usability and effectiveness of the council’s digital services, and ensuring they are designed in an inclusive way using best practice to meet user need and accessibility standards.
  • Provide design and technical expertise and be responsible for user journeys on maidstone.gov.uk, sharing specialist knowledge and best practice of user experience design with other team members.
  • Manage editorial content on a day-to-day basis, making sure the website and related digital channels are kept up-to-date and that information is clear and consistent.
  • Develop and maintain the council’s digital style guide, making sure that this is followed by the team and is communicated to the wider council.
  • Work with content designers and other content authors to ensure content meets the digital product style and accessibility standards.
  • Scope, plan and run collaborative projects to design user-centred interfaces and transaction flows.
  • Collaborate with Services designers, business analysts and transformation officers to create, iterate and communicate workable prototypes and turn concepts into user centred services.
  • Create and rapidly iterate low and high fidelity prototypes to test and communicate ideas.
  • Ensuring all designs and prototypes meet WCAG 2.1 AA as a minimum and AAA where possible.
  • To promote digital take up by designing for user needs.

  1. Degree or equivalent in a design-related discipline.



  1. Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
  2. Experience as an interaction designer.
  3. Significant experience of using inclusive human cantered design tools and techniques to shape the design of public facing services across a variety of channels.
  4. Experience of designing for users with accessibility needs.
  5. Experience of creating evidenced-based design.
  6. Experience of designing and delivering accessible, secure, responsive user interfaces.
  7. Experience of working collaboratively in an agile multi-disciplinary environment.
  8. Experience of effectively managing relationships with senior stakeholders including influencing and challenging decisions that don't meet user need.


Skills & Knowledge:

  1. Excellent knowledge of HTML, CSS JavaScript /.
  2. jQuery and other web languages.
  3. Deep Knowledge of Government Design Principles.
  4. Expert knowledge and understanding of web accessibility standards WCAG 2.1 and how to apply that to accessible design.
  5. Knowledge of the wider digital economy and advances in technology and have the ability to apply that understanding to your work.
  6. Excellent creative problem-solving skills.
  7. Good Knowledge of prototyping and design software such as Adobe XD.
  8. Knowledge of stakeholder management tools and techniques.
  9. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  10. Comfortable with handling multiple projects in an agile, fast paced environment.
  11. ICT Skills: Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
