The purpose of the role is to monitor the performance of schools in relation to attendance and advise on their performance – in particular with regard to groups of vulnerable pupils. Support schools to develop, implement and review their policies in relation to attendance and other aspects of social inclusion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare an agreed quota of case files and statements for the Magistrates and Family Courts, and other reports as required.
  • Chair pre court panel meetings and conduct parental interviews under caution (PACE).
  • Attend court as a witness where required.
  • Lead on the processing of Educational Penalty Notices (EPN’s) for a group of schools.
  • Be the lead School Attendance Service link, providing support, building and maintaining relationships with a group of schools and coordinating the work programme of at least one School Attendance Support Officer.
  • Work with school staff to further develop the schools’ strategies, policies and procedures for improving attendance and ensure schools have an Ofsted-ready action plan.
  • Support schools with the analysis of their data e.g. through the use of an attendance audit.
  • Support schools with safeguarding concerns relating to attendance issues e.g. welfare visits.
  • Help schools to target resources – including the time of School Attendance Support Officers – to the most vulnerable groups of pupils in relation to attendance and exclusions.
  • Lead on Level 3 and 4 attendance casework which includes home visits and liaising with families in conjunction with schools and other agencies.
  • Provide training related to the post where appropriate or requested e.g. chaperone training, induction support for school-based attendance staff in conjunction with schools.

Skills & Experience:

  1. Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
  2. Must have experience in conducting home visits and working with families.
  3. Ability to establish professional, effective working relationships with a range of partners/colleagues and children, young people and families.
  4. Ability to establish professional, effective working relationships with a range of partners/colleagues and young people and families/carers.
  5. Ability to write sensitively and clearly for young people and families where necessary.
  6. ICT Skills: Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
