A Social Work Assistant is required to support the work of the service in securing best outcomes for children, young people and their families. This will include supporting assessments of need and undertaking direct work with children, young people and their families in line with the relevant plan.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist social workers and others in the assessment of need and the implementation of plans for children and families.
  • Develop and implement plans for children where appropriate as part of the management of a caseload under the supervision of the practice supervisor or team manager as appropriate.
  • Undertake direct work with children and families as part of their plan.
  • Liaise with schools, health services, voluntary agencies and other partner agencies in developing and reviewing plans for children and their families.
  • Review and assess the impact of plans for children and families, including the chairing of meetings as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date written records.
  • Take up opportunities for relevant training and development.
  • Participate in team activities e.g. team meetings, case discussions, review of team work.
  • Participate in regular supervision (individual and group supervision).
  • Ensure confidentiality of information in line with Council policy and relevant legislation, in respect of records maintained and tasks undertaken. This includes maintaining strict confidentiality in relation to personal information (including that of service users and other employees) which may become known in the course of work or associated activities.
  • Tasks will be performed in the following locations: council offices, community venues, service-user’s homes.

  • 5 GCSEs at level A-C (including English and Maths) or equivalent.
  • Full driving licence (unless registered disabled).


Experience & Knowledge:

  • At least two years' experience of working with children, young people and their families in a social care environment, through paid or voluntary work experience.
  • Experience of working with other agencies, either in the statutory or voluntary sector.
  • Experience of working in a team.
  • Experience of managing challenging situations or conflict.
  • Experience of working to deadline, managing priorities and ability to work in a high-pressure environment.
  • Experience of keeping records of work undertaken.
  • Knowledge of child development and children’s needs.


Skills & Abilities:

  • High level of personal drive and commitment to excellent customer care.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a range of people including children, young people, parents and carers, colleagues and other professionals and managers.
  • Ability to work well with colleagues but also able to work on own initiative.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
  • Willingness on occasion to work outside or beyond core hours.
