DBS required for this role

A Senior Social Worker is required to hold a caseload of the most complex cases, utilising specialist skills to undertake work with children and families and deliver positive change. To lead in complex situations and provide professional support to staff through guidance, co-working, mentoring, and modelling authoritative practice and to lead practice development within the team to improve and maintain professional standards.  Champion and promote the highest professional standards, providing social work professional consultation to Children’s Services Teams and other agencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of the most complex work promoting high quality assessments and interventions to bring about positive change through developing effective relationships, ensuring that the voice of the child is the focus of case recording and the planning of interventions.
  • Coordinate and take responsibility for ensuring the appropriate action is taken where there are complex child protection, care/placement planning, assessment or related issues, and for promoting evidence/knowledge-based interventions and the use of restorative approaches.
  • Develop and maintain up to date professional knowledge to lead on ensuring that team practice complies with legislation, statutory guidance, service procedures and standards, agreed targets, and timescales.
  • Contribute to the management of the team by participating in key planning and decision making, providing professional supervision, contributing to appraisals, identifying training needs, delivering training, and deputising for the Team Manager or Assistant Team Manager in the delivery and/or allocation of case work as required.
  • Investigate complaints and produce reports and recommendations for follow up action.
  • Support quality assurance by conducting file audits and multi-agency reviews, developing, monitoring, and reviewing systems within the team, and collecting and reporting the views of children, parents, team members and multi-agency partners to contribute to improving practice and procedure.
  • Chair meetings, use effective presentational skills to represent the department in internal and external meetings, and provide verbal/written reports for court proceedings, case conferences and other arenas.
  • Develop or promote good interagency practice and county standards.
  • Maintain full, accurate, and up to date records in accordance with departmental practice and guidance, including the maintenance of electronic records on case management systems.

Unless the DBS requirement stated above is for a Basic Disclosure, your DBS must be either through us or be accompanied by a subscription to the DBS updating service.


  • MA/MSc/Honours Degree or Diploma in Social Work or CQSW.
  • Registration as a Social Worker with Social Work England.


  • Knowledge and understanding of the Children Act 1989, 2004 and other relevant legislation.
  • Knowledge of current policy and practice including electronic case management systems.
  • Knowledge of child development and attachment theory and understanding of the impact of parental problems and the short and long-term impacts of abuse and neglect on children.
  • Knowledge of the role played by adult services and other agencies in relation to the overall provision of service to children and families.
  • Familiarity with childcare, child protection procedures, resources, current Department of Health Guidance and Quality Protects.


  • A minimum of two years post qualifying experience in childcare social work, including substantial experience in childcare work and training relevant to this post.
  • Experience of direct working with children and families.
  • Experience of evaluating, monitoring and developing the quality of childcare practice.
  • Demonstrable expertise in assessments, including core assessments.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong IT skills using Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
  • Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively with multi-agency partners.
