Standard DBS required for this role

A Senior Lawyer is required to advise on all aspects of Adult Care Law such as DOL, COP and to effectively execute legal work.

Key responsibilities:

  • General advice to the client department in respect of their obligations under the Care Act 2014.
  • Advising on the Council’s responsibilities to persons who have no recourse to public funds, dealing with matters arising under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 including deprivation of liberty safeguards and conduct of Court of Protection cases.
  • Advising on the Council’s responsibilities under the Mental Health Act 1983.
  • Dealing with both threats of and extant judicial review proceedings.

Qualifications:

  • A Solicitor, either with a current practising certificate or eligible to apply for a practising certificate, or a qualified Barrister or a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives, or possessing an equivalent qualification gained in another jurisdiction.

 

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Substantial experience within the legal profession.
  • Experience of providing legal advice in the area of the assignment.
  • Knowledge of the law relating to the area of service where the assignment is based.
  • An awareness of the issues that face local government.
  • An understanding of the concepts underpinning administrative and corporate law as it relates to local government.

 

Skills & Abilities:

  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team, and to build effective relationships with Council Members, senior managers, business units, other sections and outside agencies
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to present to diverse audiences, including [elected Members], senior officers, staff and external agencies
  • Ability to analyse, use and present complex data in a clear and informative way.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
