To be a strategic adviser to the businesses by the delivery of high quality legal advice in the area of employment law and also under the shared services arrangements. To solve complex and ambiguous problems and offer new solutions and innovations. Anticipating changes in employment legislation, case-law and best practice and advising. To manage the provision of external legal support as may be required. To provide support to the Head of the Employment Law Team as may be required to achieve the above and any other objectives of the team from time to time
Key responsibilities:
- Responsible for providing effective and efficient employment law advice including advising on employment related strategy and policy issues which have a material impact. Anticipating changes in employment legislation, case-law and best practice and advising on the impact and working collaboratively with HR on the appropriate actions to be taken.
- Responsible for working closely with Employment Law Team colleagues to devise pragmatic solutions and recommend changes and controls to policy, procedure and practice in order to minimise risks associated with any trends that are identified as part of the employment litigation process and ensuring that all business is conducted in accordance with the Group’s statutory powers, internal processes, and other relevant legislation and regulations.
- To provide support and assistance in relation to Employment Tribunal cases as agreed with the Head of Employment Law, including undertaking all necessary steps in the employment litigation process prior to cases being outsourced and evaluating the risks associated with those cases so as to ensure that the businesses business’ interests are protected.
- Developing and mentoring junior lawyers (as required)
- Updating and maintaining standard form documentation/guidance notes etc and ensuring the retention and dissemination within the legal function of know how.
- Assisting the businesses to assess and manage risk and in addition educating in employment law issues and raising awareness levels across the businesses.
- Senior staff will rely on the recommendations and advice of the post holder as part of their decision making process. As such the post holder plays an influential role across the businesses they support
“Role Requirements” – to give yourself the maximum chance of success please try and ensure your CV addresses the following essential criteria:
- Qualified solicitor or barrister in the UK or equivalent jurisdiction (allowing for a two year training period) or unqualified practitioner
- Broad knowledge and experience of the Group’s businesses and a good understanding of the transport marketplace
- Solid experience of providing contentious and non-contentious employment law advice and practice support and managing the provision of external legal advice
- Substantial experience in the relevant field of law
- Experience in the public sector or a regulated environment
- Experience of working in a large, complex, unionised organisation
- Strong skills in negotiation, drafting, legal analysis and problem resolution
- Excellent problem solving, communications, engagement and influencing skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with proven ability to establish credibility and build strong relationships at all levels
- Ability to work under pressure, being flexible and managing conflicting priorities to meet tight deadlines
