Full Job Title: Interim PT Environmental Health Officer – Food & Safety

Job Reference: Hillingdon RQ733042

Pay Rate: £37.31 per hour PAYE

Undertake inspections and other interventions to verify food businesses are meeting food hygiene, food standards legal requirements, as well as meeting benchmark standards in associated guidance and established codes of practice. Predominantly assisting with unrated and Cat D inspections and undertaking revisits.

  • Take a key role in undertaking and assisting with food and health and safety investigations and carrying out food law enforcement.
  • Provide an effective and efficient service on behalf of the London Borough of Hillingdon in respect of food and health and safety functions.
  • Undertake inspections and other interventions to verify food businesses are meeting food hygiene, food standards and/ or health and safety legal requirements, as well as meeting benchmark standards in associated guidance and established codes of practice.
  • Exercise judgement and carry out all enforcement work in line with Council policies procedures, relevant national guidance and codes of practice, taking legal responsibility for the final decision made.


Specific Role Requirements” – to give yourself the maximum chance of success please try and ensure your CV addresses the following essential criteria:

  1. Qualifications:
    1. Higher Certificate in Food Control or Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection or Advanced Professional Certificate in Food Hygiene and Standards Control OR
    2. Degree in Environmental Health/ Master Degree in Environmental Health OR
    3. equivalency detailed in Food Law Code of Practice
  2. Experience:
    1. Experience of a varied and demanding workload and scheduling work programs utilising time and resources efficiently.
    2. Research and preparing detailed written reports.
    3. Experience of working independently with the minimum of supervision dealing with problems and challenges using critical thinking and making reasonable judgements when resolving matters.
  3. Knowledge:
    1. Excellent knowledge of Food Safety, Health Protection and Infectious Disease and keep fully conversant with all legislative and technical developments in relation to the functions of the team.
    2. Knowledge, understanding and ability to interpret and apply food safety and health and safety legislation and relevant statutory provisions, codes of practice and practice guidance
    3. Understanding of other relevant legislation in relation to food, or health & safety, infectious disease and other environmental health functions
    4. Understanding of hazards and ability to determine risk and make balanced decisions and select the most appropriate course of action, including taking formal actions having regard to council enforcement procedures and recognised codes of good practice
  4. ICT Skills:Excellent IT skills with the ability to learn service specific software
