Basic DBS disclosure required

To start in January 2023 to cover maternity for approximately 12 months. Candidates will need to be local within the Devon to carry out site inspections as and when required. This is role is part time (15 hours per week - this can be flexible with days during Monday to Friday). There is no requirement to start from the office, lots of flexibility subject to hiring manager.

Undertake inspections, investigate complaints and provide enforcement, advice and support to the public, businesses and stakeholders to enable them to comply with the requirements of legislation, control environmental health nuisance and protect public health.

Core accountabilities include:

  • Enforcing Food Safety, Health and Safety, Environmental Protection, Housing, Port Health and Public Health legislation in accordance with policies and procedures through premises inspections and investigating accidents, enquiries and complaints.
  • Providing advice and support to Members, other agencies, proprietors, staff and the public concerning food safety, health and safety, nuisance, pollution, housing, anti social behaviour and public health matters as appropriate.
  • Examining, seizing, detaining or condemning articles as necessary and appropriate;
  • Inspecting and monitoring premises licensed or registered by the Council to ensure compliance with conditions as appropriate.
  • Taking action where required in respect of:
    • Investigating communicable disease and accident reports reports;
    • Taking samples of food and water for human consumption for analysis;
    • Carrying out surveys and sampling for environmental protection purposes;
    • Investigating pest control issues, filthy and verminous premises, public health funerals, contaminated land, envirocrime, environmental health concerns and similar issues that have the potential to affect public health.
  • Collecting information and producing appropriate written records, reports and other written communications as required, dealing with routine correspondence, interviewing stakeholders and customers and obtaining information for use in connection with formal proceedings.
  • Preparing statements of evidence and associated documentation and attending Court, Public Inquiries, Tribunals etc. to give evidence on behalf of the Council where necessary;
  • Responding to service requests and issues raised by stakeholders and customers. Responding to consultations for planning approval, licensing etc. Researching, preparing and drafting replies which reflect current best practice and cover the full range of appropriate work activities;
  • Taking an active part in environmental health and health promotion initiatives, preparing and delivering tailored business training in specific areas of work activity as directed and maintaining appropriate records of training;
  • Working with other services and external agencies to resolve public health issues.

 

Specific Role Requirements” – to give yourself the maximum chance of success please try and ensure your CV addresses the following essential criteria:

  1. Qualifications:
    1. Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health and EHRB registration
    2. NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety - desirable
  2. Experience in permitted processes and air quality.
  3. Up to date, detailed professional knowledge of relevant legislation, codes of practice and guidance
  4. Good level of awareness of current environmental health issues
  5. Understanding of the legal controls around investigative processes (PACE, RIPA etc.)
  6. ICT Skills: Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, databases and ICT systems
