Interim Principal Urban Design Officer – Town Planning

The purpose of the role to be the lead officer in relation to urban design matters in the Borough. The post will play a vital role in working with developers to secure good quality, planning policy compliant development design that becomes a welcome addition to the Borough.

The post holder will consider a range of planning applications and site allocations in relation to achieving positive urban design. They will review and provide formal commentary on planning applications, pre-planning enquiries and work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure development designs reflect wider concerns and opportunities.

Qualifications:

  1. Postgraduate Qualification in Urban Design, Historic Building Conservation, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Town Planning, or other similar discipline.
  2. You will have a relevant professional or equivalent degree level qualification in Urban Design/Town Planning.

 

Skills & Experience:

  1. Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
  2. Ability to be proactive in the promotion of high-quality design and conservation work.
  3. Awareness of current Urban Design and Conservation best practice.
  4. Excellent influencing and negotiating skills when working with developers and applicants to promote high quality Conservation and Design solutions.
  5. Experience of carrying out negotiations on design and conservation matters with developers and their consultants.
  6. Experience of preparing, drafting, and writing Planning and Design Briefs and Conservation Area Character Appraisals.
  7. ICT Skills: Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
