A Property & Contracts Lawyer is required to work across two local authorities and provide professional legal advice and support to the Assets and Property Team.

The post-holder is responsible for supporting the Property and Contracts lawyers in providing advice and support for acquisitions and disposals, leases, contracts and procurement, complex advice and including specific project work.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide proactive and high-quality support to the Head of Legal Services and Principal Property Lead in relation to advice and support for acquisitions and disposals, leases, contracts and procurement, complex advice and including specific project work.
  • Provide support to the Principal Property Lead as the business partner for the Assets and Property Team.
  • Negotiate and draft all relevant documents to support, sales and acquisitions, leases, and licences.
  • Support property-related projects with the relevant legal support.
  • Provide professional and clear advice (both orally and in writing) to the Councils, Committees, Members and officers on all Property, Contracts, Procurement and Assets matters.
  • Instruct Counsel and to attend conferences with Counsel.
  • Provide training and development to Members and Officers in relation to property and contract matters.
  • Carry out all such other tasks that may from time to time be allocated by the Head of Legal Services and Monitoring Officer.
  • Act as one of the Deputy Monitoring Officers dealing with code of conduct complaints and other governance related issues.

  • Extensive experience as a practising Solicitor or Barrister (or equivalent qualification and experience).


  • Experience of working in local government sector and providing advice in Council, Executive, Committee, or other public meetings.
  • Recent experience in property legal matters including drafting, negotiating, and finding solutions to complex issues.
  • Providing legal support on complex property and contract issues on specific projects.

Skills/Technical skills:

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels.
  • Exercise sound judgement in the public interest, setting out options and risks as necessary.
  • Capable of managing competing priorities and overseeing varied case load.
  • Ability to give clear explanations whilst advising on complex legal matters.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills including influencing skills.
  • Strong negotiation and presentation skills.
