NB: Police Vacancy - only for candidates with a minimum of 5 years continuous UK address history. Please note that this vacancy is subject to a strict security vetting procedure.

As an Occupational Health Advisor (OHA), you will be required to provide evidence based Occupational Health services to Police Officers and Staff in a caring and respectful manner whilst preserving their dignity, making sure there is complete adherence to clinical compliance and regulatory/governance in accordance to all relevant policies, service standards, guidelines and statutory requirements.

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver an efficient and effective Occupational Health service, ensuring all activities are delivered professionally and sensitively, including the provision of specialist advice to the Force on workplace health issues and to ensure that it meets its obligations under health and safety legislation, Equality Act, Working Time Regulations and other relevant legislation.
  • Manage complex cases on a regular basis, including the assessment of physical and mental health needs, conducting case review meetings and referral, where necessary, to internal and external health specialists.
  • Provide comprehensive management updates and work in partnership with the HR Team and line managers to assist in the management of absence, restricted duties and return to work issues.
  • Conduct health and pre-employment medical screening and preventative healthcare advice.
  • To triage Occupational Health referrals for assignment to the OHA and Force Medical Advisor (FMA).
  • Deliver an effective and efficient vaccination service to Officers and Staff in the Occupational Health Unit and by travelling independently around and outside of the Force establishment delivering and promoting the service such as during annual Flu Campaigns and Hepatitis B clinics.
  • Provide guidance, support and health education to individuals and groups on a confidential basis, raise awareness of health risks, promote a healthy and safe working environment and undertake clinical services as directed.
  • To undertake the Structured Interviews for the Psychological Screening of High-Risk Roles where required following training.
  • To provide support to the Occupational Health & Wellbeing Manager with relevant projects and deputise when necessary.
  • Monitor as directed, factors that may affect the health and welfare of employees and bring specific health matters to the attention of the Occupational Health & Wellbeing Manager.
  • Ensure that any medical equipment and stores are kept in good order and replenished when required.

Qualifications:

  1. Must be a registered general nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  2. Must hold an Occupational Health qualification at Diploma level or above, or willing to work towards. This qualification will be supported by Gwent Police.
  3. Level 1 Welsh essential (training will be given). Welsh language skills Level 2 and above are desirable.

 

Experience:

  1. Post qualification Occupational Health experience in a multi-site organisation is desirable
  2. Must demonstrate experience of working independently, managing own workload and working in a multi-disciplined team.
  3. Must possess post qualification experience in a clinical setting along with proven ability to practically apply medical knowledge and experience within a complex organisation with specialist requirements.
  4. Must have previous experience of undertaking sickness absence consultations and producing comprehensive management reports.
  5. Should have previous experience of running vaccination / health surveillance programmes.
  6. Must be able to evidence ability to work autonomously, making sound evidence-based decisions.

 

Skills & Knowledge:

  1. Must have knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, including the Equality Act, Medical Records Act, Data Protection Act and Health and Safety at Work Act.
  2. Must maintain their continuous professional development by keeping up to date with best practice in all aspects of Occupational Health and changes to national standards and legislation, impacting on the Police Service to provide clinical governance and ensure relevant advice is given to the force.
  3. A practical knowledge of wellbeing issues and promotional activities relating to large organisations and be able to adapt knowledge towards a Policing culture.
  4. To be able to undertake relevant research to provide evidenced-based advice to Officers and Staff of the Force.
  5. Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
