Assist and participate in the delivery of a range of high quality, efficient; customer focussed operational services in line with RBG strategic ambitions and customer focussed services at Greenwich Public Mortuary (GPM).
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake duties relating to the reception, identification, storage and release of bodies, maintaining a register and ensuring that particular attention is paid to the security and return of valuables, and the conduct of persons visiting the Mortuary for the purpose of depositing or collecting bodies. Deal with members of the public in a sympathetic and caring nature when discussing all issues relating to the service.
- Advise, liaise and co-operate with officers of other departments / directorates, local or public authorities, police, coroner’s officers, pathologists, ambulance personnel, undertakers and all other individuals associated with the GPM.
- Bring to the attention of the Mortuary Manager and other colleagues any minor or emergency repairs needing attention / repair and take necessary action to prevent injury to others or oneself. To make arrangements with RBG colleagues and contractors to provide safe access to the building for maintenance work when required.
- Bring to the attention of work colleagues any bodies which need to be attended to by other RBG colleagues or external organisations for disposal.
- Fully participate in staff training to ensure you are adequately trained and fully understand relevant statutory legalisation, industry related codes of practice, guiding principles and PRaD scheme as required. Work towards the Anatomical Pathology
- Technicians certificate and assist all colleagues to develop and implement service delivery initiatives to improve the mortuary service.
- Assist in the preparation and restoration of bodies and to attend “call-outs” as required, and in particular, to assist special and defence post-mortem examinations. Prepare and lay out the body for identification purposes in accordance with current procedures. Arrange appointments for the families / friends to view / identify the deceased.
- Participate and maintain the cleaning and sterilisation of the post mortem rooms, instruments, apparatus and equipment to ensure it is kept in a safe and hygienic condition, including the disposal and safe packaging of all clinical waste and contaminated sharps in accordance to current Waste and Environment Regulations and procedures.
- Carry out and keep a record of periodic checks of mechanical equipment and make recommendations in relation to the maintenance and safety of all the equipment, paying particular attention to the refrigerated storage temperatures and keeping records as directed.

Qualifications:
- Work towards the Diploma in APT and have significant current practical mortuary / bereavement experience.
Skills & Experience:
- Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
- Experience of working within a team in a Mortuary front-line service area within a local authority or the private sector and dealing with the public in a caring and courteous manner.
- To hold an Anatomical Pathology Technicians (APT) qualification and have experience of working within the Human Tissue Act 2004 framework.
- Experience of keeping records updated in relation to stock, refrigeration, body storage, recording of personal effects and updating paper-based and IT systems as required.
- An understanding of Mortuary Processes and Customer Care within the Mortuary and Bereavement Service Industries.
- Able to use specialized tools, instruments, equipment and plant relating to the Mortuary activities.
- Experience and knowledge of all practices including all types of PM examinations is welcomed. The department holds a HTA license and encourages all staff to be UKDVI and AHCS registered.
- Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
