An experienced lawyer is required to deal with complex large scale acquisitions and disposals with ability to advise (without supervision) on a range of property issues including development documentation, conditional agreements for lease, building leases and other conditional documents for the disposal of regeneration sites.  The successful candidate should also be able to demonstrate ability to draft and review complex sale agreements (conditional/unconditional), overage deeds, options, pre-emption agreements etc.

The work requires adaptability, producing work to tight deadlines and managing conflicting priorities successfully.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Team Manager or Head of Service, the post holder will undertake all types of legal work, providing general legal and procedural advice & support to enable the Council to meet its legal obligations. Although the post holder will specialise in an area of the law, they will be required to work flexibility and with appropriate training work across several areas.
  • Provide proactive legal support to the Council, to enable its policy and strategic objectives to be met minimising the risk of legal challenge or complaints. Ensuring the advice and support given is concise and engaged with the required outcome(s).
  • Advocate and/or negotiate on behalf of the City Council in courts, tribunals, committees and panels.
  • Keep legal knowledge up to date, to carry out legal research and maintain a thorough knowledge of existing and impending legislation in relation to practice area.
  • Assist and co-operate with other members of the team and other officers within the Legal Services Division and provide cover as required.

Qualifications:

  • Qualified barrister or solicitor or CILEX.

Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of property law.
  • Sound working knowledge of local government law and practice

Experience:

  • Substantial experience in practice as a qualified solicitor or barrister.
  • Experience of local government, property related transactions.
  • Experience of dealing with the public.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a post qualification role.
  • Experience of advising and drafting in contentious and non-contentious work related to property matters

Skills & Abilities:

  • Good communication skills, both oral and written to include presentation of complex and contentious issues to a wide and varied audience.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
  • Ability to research and analyse complex information.
  • A commitment to customer services.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities with the ability to manage a varied workload.
