Interim Specialist Speech & Language Therapist

To provide a specialist speech & language therapy service to children & young people with autism and/or social communication needs AND/OR Developmental Language Disorder/speech sound disorder in mainstream schools
Key Responsibilities:
- To liaise with senior managers in schools and settings to ensure maximum curricular access and progression for pupils with autism spectrum disorder, with particular focus on use of relevant national and local data to inform target setting and outcomes for identified groups of children with SEN
- To ensure that all tasks and duties for which the post holder is responsible are carried out in a way that meets the expected service and professional standards and are in line with expected protocols and procedures, and to work in a way that is positive and well organised
- To work with the group manager and co-ordinators to devise, implement and review procedures and quality management systems within the overall framework of the service plan and to monitor and evaluate the overall impact of the team and any individual project for which the post holder is responsible
- To assess, design, deliver, model and evaluate a range of specialist programmes of support and intervention for pupils with autism spectrum disorder ,working closely with parents/carers and the range of school staff and maintaining a high level of professional competence and independent decision making
- To make independent decisions about the timing and model of support appropriate to the pupil’s needs at different times in negotiation with school staff, parents and other agencies.
- To take responsibility for co-ordinating and/or providing specialist advice and information on the management of pupils with autism spectrum disorder to colleagues in the team, other support services and in schools.
- To devise, implement and evaluate a range of training opportunities for school staff, parents/carers and other agencies as arising from the identified needs of individual pupils and within the overall service plan.
- To liaise closely with school staff and pupils themselves in curriculum planning, target setting and the development of resources and to use knowledge of the curriculum and it’s implementation in schools to make decisions about the development of specialist programmes in school.
- To provide advice, support and modelling for parents and carers and other family members, and to respond to their needs in the context of the individual child as well as based on a wider knowledge of language development and difficulties.
- To take the lead in the development of one or more identified team projects from the service plan and to contribute to a range of other planned projects as appropriate

- Appropriate degree or post graduate qualification and licence to practice as recognised by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
- Knowledge of a range of specialist assessment techniques, especially appropriate to the school, classroom and curriculum context
- Knowledge of the target setting process and classroom -focussed planning and intervention
- Significant experience of working in both mainstream primary and secondary school settings
- Significant experience of working with children with autism spectrum disorder and associated learning difficulties
- Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills and communication skills, written and verbal
- Able to identify areas needing development in school settings and to communicate ideas
