Temporary Fleet Maintenance Technician x2 - Mechanic

37 Monday – Friday, normal working hours 

This opening assignment is for 3 months  

City: SCUNTHORPE   

The role will work on a shift basis doing 6am to 2pm and 1pm to 9pm on alternate weeks.  

There may be the opportunity for additional hours on a Saturday, on a voluntary basis. 

To inspect, maintain, diagnose & repair faults on council vehicles, plant, machinery and equipment. To carry out M.O.T. testing both on the Council’s fleet and on privately owned vehicles. To inspect, maintain, diagnose & repair faults on customers vehicles, plant, machinery and equipment 

Key Responsibilities: 

 

  • Carry out scheduled services and necessary repairs on the Council’s fleet of vehicles and equipment.  
  • In consultation with the Fleet Workshop Manager, order spare parts to ensure the most cost effective method of repair.  
  • Deputise for a Fleet Workshop Manager as and when required to ensure the smooth running of the service.  
  • Report and investigate persistent technical problems noted in repair work and assist in their solutions.  
  • Ensure that vehicle downtime is kept to a minimum and that repair standards are met.  
  • In co-operation with management, maintain the health & safety standards within the workshop and comply with statutory requirements.   
  • Maintain workshop cleanliness and dispose of materials in accordance with the Council’s environmental policies.  
  • Liaise with the Fleet Workshop Manager and customers regarding vehicle availability before and after repair.  
  • Complete job cards, inspection reports and associated documentation in an accurate and timely manner complying with any statutory requirements   
  • Be aware of the operating requirements of the M.O.T. station and assist in the operation of the booking system

Qualifications: 

  • City & Guilds in Motor Vehicle Technology (level 2) or NVQ equivalent in Motor Vehicle Technology or 10 years proven experience of vehicle repair and maintenance of light commercial and heavy commercial vehicles 
  • Current driving licence for vehicles up to 3500 Kg gross vehicle weight.   

 

Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of hydraulic/pneumatic systems on vehicles (electrical and electronic) 

 

Skills & Abilities: 

  • Ability to achieve nominated tester status within 12 months.  
  • Ability to gain vocational driving licence (category C) within 12 months.  
  • Ability to obtain IRTEC Certificate in vehicle inspection.  
  • Ability to carry out heavy lifting, sometimes in awkward positions 
  • The ability to accurately diagnose the cause of a wide range of vehicle faults
