Working with children and young people referred into YOS and their families/carers where appropriate, who are at risk of drugs and other substance misuse, to undertake assessment to identify needs and risk and provide a range of 1:1 interventions and onward referral where required. To enhance the life prospects of children and young people and their families 

Key responsibilities: 


  • Managing your own caseload of children and young people referred into YOS.  
  • Responding to safeguarding concerns in line with North Somerset Council Protocol where personal liberty or safety is at stake.  
  • Contributing to the development and supervision of other YOT workers and input into undertaking student/volunteer supervision. 
  • Maintaining electronic client records on YOS Database.  
  • Participating in the YOS development programmes and the promotion of specialist skills. 
  • Actively contribute to the work of the YOS in planning, delivering and evaluating individual and groupwork programmes. 
  • Undertake YOS Assessments with children and young people to inform interventions and referral where appropriate.   
  • Providing advice on healthy lifestyles including sexual health, smoking cessation and substance misuse to young people.  
  • Developing partnership working with a range of organisations including health, education, public health, adult services (on transitioning) and other voluntary organisations.  
  • Develop the principles of restorative justice and family mediation work in interventions with children and young people and others involved

  • Professional qualification working with young people (for example teaching, probation, social work, youth and community work, health) to degree level or equivalent 
  • Knowledge of the Crime and Disorder Act, and Children’s Act 
  • Knowledge of the causes of youth crime and effective methods of preventing youth offending 
  • Understanding of health and safety considerations 
  • Experience of directly working with young people with substance misuse issues 
  • Good organisation skills with ability to prioritise work and respond flexibly to demands and time constraints 
  • Ability to develop, implement and evaluate a range of effective interventions in work with children and young people and their families/carers
