You will attend court with the Coroner. You will be responsible for the smooth running of the court at inquest hearings. You will ensure that all witnesses are present and that everybody is seated in court on time. In inquests when the Coroner is sitting with a jury you will be responsible for administrative arrangements at court in relation to the jurors. You will also be responsible for operating the court recording equipment at all inquest hearings.
You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as tact and compassion, as you will be dealing with bereaved families, professional witnesses and members of the public
Key Responsibilities:
- Will have experience in dealing with members of the public.
- Will be able to develop a sound general knowledge of practice and procedure at Inquests.
- Will have a good knowledge of IT including Teams and recording equipment.
- Prior to Inquest hearings the Court Clerk will look at the court file, including statements and reports, and will have a good knowledge of the contents. At the Inquest hearing he/she will follow the evidence diligently so as to be able to intervene, as required, with necessary reports and documents.
- Prior to the Inquest the Court Clerk will ensure that all witnesses have replied to their witness notifications and will contact any witness who have not attended court or whose attendance is in doubt.
- On the day of the Inquest the Court Clerk will announce his/her presence to the family and witnesses and ensure that everyone required to attend court is present. He/she will explain the procedures to the family and witnesses and take care to ensure that all reasonable needs are met. The Court Clerk will make tactful inquiries of those who are expected to give evidence as to the manner in which they wish to take the oath, in order to satisfy those wishes and the needs of religions and faiths. The Court Clerk will have knowledge of relevant oaths and declarations and will be familiar with and have access to appropriate holy books.
- Will at all times conduct him/herself in a smart and respectful manner and take care to attend to the needs of the bereaved.
- Will have a good working knowledge of the registration system and be prepared to advise families with regard to the provision of death certificates.
- Will have at his/her disposal an independent means of transport and will take to court all files and other documentation, as required, together with court recording equipment. During the course of the Inquest the Court Clerk will record the proceedings and will notify the Coroner of the need to halt the proceedings should the recording equipment be found not to be functioning

Qualifications:
- Must be educated to GCSE standard, including English language
Knowledge:
- Awareness of Health and Safety issues in relation to Manual Handling.
Experience:
- Experience in dealing with members of the public
