The purpose of the role is to support the manager to develop and enhance targeted and specialist youth and children’s services.

The Youth Justice Service seeks to provide children and young people with positive, preventative, out of court, and statutory intervention to improve their safety and wellbeing, prevent offending or re- offending.

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of staff as delegated by the team manager, who deliver effective case management practice to vulnerable young people. This includes co-working cases and being an expert practitioner; particularly in terms of risk management; managing risk of harm to children, particularly through offending, risk of harm from children, children’s risk to themselves, and children’s safety and wellbeing.
  • Convene and chair case specific and other liaison/multiagency meetings as appropriate.
  • Work with the Police to promote the prevention of crime and reduce risks to victims and the public
  • Reduce the risks of youth crime, to families, communities and victims and safeguard the welfare of young people by effective supervision of staff.
  • Have responsibility delegated by the team manager for the delivery of performance indicators in line with set targets, Youth Justice Board expectations and requirements and National Standard.
  • Feedback to the Team Manager Youth Justice Service with recommendations and prioritise evidence-based decision-making alongside stakeholder engagement.
  • Maintain and use audit activity to ensure client based electronic records is up to date authorising work within the set procedure and timescales. Report any issues to Team Manager whilst suggesting solutions for improvements.
  • Use a range of methods to develop staff skills and to assess the output of training and identify any training/development needs; including annual appraisal and review.
  • Contribute to the induction of new staff in partnership with other managers, departments and staff.

Qualifications:

  1. Professional qualification in a relevant professional field e.g. Diploma level in Social Work, CQSW, Diploma in Probation Studies, Health, Teaching, Youth work, professional qualifications, or evidenced equivalent qualification (e.g. Health/Clinical/Youth & Community).
  2. Social Work England registered where appropriate.

 

Experience:

  1. Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
  2. Experience of working within the Criminal Justice System, Children’s Social Care, Community roles, Early Years, Health, Youth Work, or Targeted Youth Support.
  3. Experience of contributing to delivery of staff supervision and performance setting.
  4. Good understanding and proven ability to use database information systems.
  5. Proven ability to lead and manage a team (staff or students) and a record of challenging poor performance
  6. Ability to manage budgets, to meet defined targets
  7. Ability to prepare & present complex issues & reports in a clear & convincing manner.
  8. Proven ability to communicate with all including colleagues, partners, stakeholders, children, young people and parents/carers in a variety of formats.
  9. ICT Skills: Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
