An Accountancy Assistant is required to undertake a range of financial tasks and procedures to support the provision of financial services to schools.

Key responsibilities:

  • Prepare revenue and capital budgets and provide monitoring information in line with corporate and directorate requirements.
  • Support the finalisation of the outturn position, and the production of the statutory accounts and associated working papers.
  • Maintain accounting records and financial systems, ensuring financial controls operate in line with financial regulations.
  • Respond to queries, and provide advice and guidance to clients as required.
  • Action budget and other required changes in the General Ledger.
  • Produce statistical and management information from a range of sources.
  • Complete relevant grant claims and returns within specified deadlines.
  • Train staff in schools regarding the use of financial systems.
  • Work directly with School Bursars and Headteachers on the preparation of budget monitor statements.
  • Deal with queries/concerns from School Management Teams regarding financial transactions and the completion of financial returns, and to resolve queries as far as possible without reference to School Business Managers. Work with School Business Managers to ensure that an effective and good value for money traded service is provided to schools.

Qualifications:

  • Achieved or working towards AAT or any other recognised accounting qualification.

 

Experience & Skills:

  • Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
  • Experience of preparing revenue and capital budgets and provide monitoring information.
  • Experience of maintaining accounting records and financial systems and producing statistical and management information.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
