What's involved with this role:

A highly motivated Desktop Engineer is required to join the busy ICT First Line Team. The post holder will be responsible for providing technical advice, guidance and support for the portfolio of devices and software maintained by ICT Services. You will have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of projects undertaken by the desktop team and play a key role in the Council’s office move.

As you will be required to travel to supported sites, a full UK driving licence is required.

Duties include:

  • Provide assistance to users, both in person and over the phone, in a professional manner following agreed procedures and provide regular updates and feedback to users.
  • Maintain accurate records of user requests, contact details and outcome utilising the ICT Service Desk call management application HEAT.
  • Demonstrate the culture of ICT Services and our Ethos of YourICT “The customer is at the heart of everything we do” by providing great customer service.
  • Install or remove hardware and/or software, using supplied installation instructions and tools; follow agreed standards, including those for electrical work. Agree the timing of the work with those affected, e.g. customers, management, and third parties where appropriate, ensuring minimum disruption at all times.
  • Conduct tests of the hardware and/or software affected using supplied test procedures and diagnostic tools and help to resolve problems and faults, and correct malfunctions.
  • Undertake all installation and maintenance work associated with the end user estate both onsite and remote in line with the agreed service support hours.
  • Use available software or specialist monitoring tools to maintain awareness and control of the hardware and software.
  • Maintain accurate records of ICT assets reporting details of all hardware/software items that have been installed and removed so that configuration management records can be updated.

  6. Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
    1. Proficient in techniques for ensuring that full account is taken of customers’ real and stated needs in the delivery of ICT services.
    2. Proficient in the frameworks and principles on which networks, systems, equipment and resources are based. Examples: Windows 10, SCCM, UNIX, Oracle, TDM, ATM, TCP/IP.
    3. Familiar with the planning and management of the interaction between two or more networking systems, computers or other "intelligent" devices.  Examples: topological design, load balancing.
    4. Familiar with the discipline which gives precise control over IT assets by allowing ICT management to maintain information about the "configuration items", including hardware devices, computer programs, documentation, telecommunications services and computer centre facilities, required to deliver an IT service.
    5. Proficient in installation, testing and commissioning of supplier specific equipment and software in all legitimate operational environments.
    6. Proficient in the knowledge and ability to install and maintain hardware systems in a way that ensures they operate within their planned specification and are safe to use by those authorised to work with them.
    7. Familiar with any tool or system which provides access security control (i.e. prevents unauthorised access to systems). Example: Active Directory.


Other preferable/desirable details to include on your CV, if applicable:

  3. ITIL 3 Foundation qualification.

  5. Familiar with the application of automated systems to the support of specific business functions or processes. Examples: call logging and management.
