Pay Rate: Up to £675 per day pay range subject to IR35 status

Location: London or Milton Keynes or East Kilbride – 3 days a week in the office as a minimum.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Providing direct written and verbal responses to the DG Finance and Corporate, ministers and private offices on sustainability policy, provide reports to the boards, ministers and the Foreign Secretary on performance against sustainability targets and the ministerial Greening Government Commitments. Provide responses to Freedom of Information (FOI) and Parliamentary Question (PQ) requests in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Advise on performance and policy on overseas estate (eg. energy, waste, water performance), with accountability through core KPIs on delivery and outcomes including financial and carbon savings.
  • Management the EMS (accredited to ISO14001), ensuring continuous improvement, supporting external accreditation bodies and delivering an internal auditing function on the operational UK estate.
  • Implement and develop environmental policies on behalf of the team. Set policy standards to ensure quality and consistency of service delivery for: advice, training and auditing services.
  • Engage with ESND design colleagues to ensure appropriate advice is provided in relation to the specification of new build and refurbishment projects.
  • Advise and support the delivery of the sustainability projects costing many millions of pounds in total and also responsible allocating and coordinating the spending of annual group sustainability funding to deliver the achievement of the GGC & Net Zero targets.
  • As a specialist, the post holder will inform the group of relevant innovation in sustainability and ensure professional qualifications of self and staff and membership of professional bodies maintained.


Key Requirements:

  • Technical qualifications and membership of a professional body such as CIBSE, IMechE, IET, RICS, ICE, CEnv or similar professional bodies including IEMA
  • Experience in managing Environmental Management Systems accredited to ISO14001 and relevant qualification in internal auditing of Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
  • Qualifications in sustainability, environmental management & sustainable development & built environment design standards (e.g. BREEAM)
  • Considerable experience in Environmental Management, sustainable design in construction/estate operations
  • Broad understanding of UK Government’s sustainability agenda, Greening Government Commitment & Defra’s 25 year environment strategy
  • Excellent customer focus and proven record of building relationships with key customers
  • Experience in international arenas.
  • A good understanding of the built environment.
  • An appreciation of cross government working and NGO international operations.
  • Evidence of technical skills expertise (Candidates will be asked to provide a 250-word example for each technical skill)
  • Knowledge and experience in managing ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • Understanding of  Government’s sustainability agenda, Greening Government Commitment &  the Group 25 year environment strategy
  • Qualifications in sustainability, environmental management & sustainable development & built environment design standards (e.g. BREEAM)
  • Security Clearance required and sole British National
