Role: Payroll Team Leader
Contract Length: anticipated 2-3 months, with potential to be extended for the right candidate
Location: Guildford and two days remote working.
Our client is within the public sector, and they are looking to hire a Payroll Team Leader to take responsibility for the line management of the Payroll team and provide an efficient Payroll service to the organisation. You will ensure all Payroll processing is run accurately and to deadlines.
As the Payroll Team Leader you will have at at least two years experience working in payroll, with a good understanding of all relevant processes. You will manage the team including line management performance and co-operate with internal and external stakeholders, including HMRC.
As the Payroll Team Leader you will lead a team so preferably you will have had at least two direct reports as this is a mentoring and leadership role. A degree or equivalent experience, evidenced by already developed specialist knowledge & experience in a payroll environment is also desirable for this role.
As the Payroll Team Leader you will have the following responsibilities:
- Day-to-day line management of the Payroll team, ensuring all processes and procedures are dealt with and administered in a timely and professional manner and that all transactions are accurately recorded.
- Manage, train and develop the Payroll team in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
- Work closely with the line managers providing professional leadership and advice to ensure they clearly understand their responsibilities in the administration processes.
- Plan and implement the training of the Payroll team and temporary staff ensuring that they are able to meet departmental objectives and perform within Payroll procedures being able to interpret any changes
- Determine/agree and review payroll and pensions procedures; action all new starters, changes and leaver information, update records and files in accordance with Agenda for Change, DH and Statutory policies.
- Manage staff performance; agreeing objectives with staff and undertaking the annual Performance and Development Reviews (PDRs) in line with the Knowledge and Skills Framework.
- Develop a client-focused culture within the Payroll team, ensuring that queries are dealt with promptly and courteously, with any necessary investigations being carried out in a timely manner.
- Undertake learning and development of staff on all Payroll and associated matters including statutory and mandatory training, induction lectures, presentations, workshops and other methods of training delivery.
- As required, deputise in the absence of the Payroll Manager.
- Managing Compliance - ensure that appropriate controls for the, analysis and checking processes are in place and complied with to verify the accuracy and completeness of input, resulting in gross payments, deductions and net pay.
- Assist the Payroll Manager in ensuring all checking for the Payroll team is processed are completed in line with statutory timetables.
As the Payroll Team Leader you will have worked in a similar role and will have the following skillset:
- Education to degree level or equivalent experience, evidenced by already developed specialist knowledge & experience in a payroll environment.
- EDCL qualified or equivalent.
- Demonstrable management experience in reward and or payroll supervisory experience
- Management/supervision of a team
- Experience of gaining respect and credibility with seniors
- Expert knowledge of Tax, National Insurance and all statutory payroll payments and deductions
- Analyse and interpret confidential, complex payroll data for Trust senior management.
- Able to plan and supervise the Payroll team to achieve departmental objectives and performance standards.
- Excellent people manager – ability to delegate, manage, and motivate to inspire high performance across the Payroll Team.
- Be able to plan and manage time effectively as priorities may change frequently.
- Experience of and proven skills in the initiation and management of process change in a controlled environment.
- Experience of introducing and maintaining proper audit/management controls.
- Able to work without supervision or reference to Manager to achieve annual objectives to the desired standard.
- Able to work on a number of projects simultaneously and deliver to agreed deadlines within broad professional policies.
- Be numerate, literate and accurate.
- Highly developed analytical skills and able to review processes and recommend appropriate changes to improve efficiency.
