 Hybrid working – Candidates must bring their own laptop and equipment 

The senior engineer will technically understand cloud platforms to be able to help and assist architects deliver design documentation. The senior engineer must understand how cloud platforms link between data centres and supplier sites securely. When onboarding Cloud accounts, a technical understanding on how to apply design standards, recommend, and apply security best practice, optimise, and modernise using latest products. Growing the existing team is vital, mentoring existing employees, help with development plans, and ensure knowledge sharing. But importantly, the senior engineer will assist in writing the strategy for the team going forward. 

As a proficient scripter, the senior engineer will write and peer review code. Utilising scripting skills to help DevOps teams deliver infrastructure as a code through pipelines. Importantly assisting other tech teams write code that builds infrastructure and extract data from the cloud platforms. The senior engineer will lead on the conversations with stakeholders. Ensuring the correct decisions are made when using public Cloud. By working closely with the security and architect team, to define and write policies 

Key Responsibilities: 

 

  • Managing time: Responsible for effective time management to develop skills, maintain technology availability, mentor junior team members and maintain awareness of technology trends 
  • Compliance: Identify technical dependencies, risks, and issues to maintain vendor, statutory and T&D compliance levels  
  • Service Improvement: Identify trends and forecast activity to mitigate technical and service outages through proactive planning 
  • Supplier Management: Manage suppliers adherence to Service Level Agreements and work with vendors to minimise service disruption by adhering to governance for changes, release and security 
  • Continuous improvements: Responsible for identifying trends and proactively carrying out improvements to assist in maintaining up to date, stable and secure technologies  
  • Role Model: Deliver technical leadership and behave as a role model to junior members of the team wishing to progress  
  • Service provision: Be part of a 24/7 on call rota delivering continuous support for technology that underpins the business service provision along with change implementation outside of core working hours  
  • Incident resolution: Provide technical support to restore service when technology components fail

Qualifications: 

  • A Degree in a relevant technology/computer science subject/equivalent technical qualification plus sound on the job experience of the platform specialism or equivalent extensive on-the job experience in IT infrastructure and in the particular platform specialism 

 

Knowledge: 

  • In depth knowledge of the latest and emerging technologies likely to be employed in designing and delivering Enterprise Wide quality solutions in the chosen platform.  
  • Knowledge of ITIL and its practical implementation in large organisations.  
  • Knowledge of agile methodologies, such as Scrum 
  • The relevant national and international legislation pertaining to the Government/Public Sector IT – e.g. Data Protection Act, EU Procurement Directives and Freedom of Information Act. 

 

Experience: 

  • Highly experienced in planning own activities 
  • Experience of working in teams delivering support in an enterprise environment of 20k plus users  
  • Experience with AWS cloud (desirable) 
  • Worked as a senior member of a technical team, acting as a technical authority and providing mentorship to junior members of the team  
  • Delivered support to technology that runs on a 24/7 basis 
  • Implemented updated versions of technology in line with approved designs 
  • Provided technical advice to management team, relating technical terms to non technical people with ease 

 

Skills & Abilities: 

  • Highly skilled at analysing data to determine trends and patterns to proactive mitigate service affecting issues 
  • Highly skilled at solving complex challenges, being able to communicate coherently throughout the process 
  • Excellent written and communication skills 
  • Proven ability to work with suppliers, internal teams and customers as necessary to reliably deliver component technologies that combine to form business services 
  • Demonstrable ability to automate Azure infrastructure 
  • Able to create infrastructure using CloudFormation (desirable) 
  • Demonstrable ARM (Azure Resource Manager) Scripting 
  • Azure Policy creation to ISO27001 security standard 
  • Write and peer review PowerShell scripting 
  • Identify and write auto-remediation scripts 
  • Demonstrate optimisation and cost saving techniques to company strategy 
  • Create and edit YAML pipelines 
  • Deploying code using Azure DevOps 
  • Communicates clearly adapting the style of communication to meet the varying audience   
  • Proficient in risk identification and mitigation planning to reduce service impacting issues
